Launch of the Morrison Pamphlets Integrated Database

The Toyo Bunko has launched the Morrison Pamphlets Integrated Database.

The Morrison Pamphlets are a collection of more than 6,000 pamphlets gathered by G. E. Morrison, Peking correspondent for The Times in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The database provides page images of the collection, arranged according to the classified catalogue published in 1972.

Key features:

  • Catalogue search by title, author, call number, and classification
  • Full-text search of OCR text, with matches highlighted on the page image
  • Original text summarization and Japanese summaries powered by OCR and AI technologies.
  • Visualizations of classification, publication year, and vocabulary in the texts
  • Open APIs (IIIF, DTS, and JSON)

Note: Some pages may be hard to read because the original materials were damaged by water.

The construction of this database was made possible in part through the research grant received by Yoshinobu Shiba from the Tang Prize Foundation. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Yoshinobu Shiba and the Tang Prize Foundation for their generous support.
