Overview:
This course provides an introductory overview of Kabuki, Japan’s iconic traditional performing art, delivered entirely in English. By examining precious historical materials from the Toyo Bunko collection, such as shibai-banzuke (theater programs), we will explore the history and stylized aesthetics of Kabuki in an accessible manner. The lectures aim to redefine Kabuki through a global lens, translating specialized knowledge into clear, straightforward English. Beginners are most welcome.
The lecture will be delivered entirely in English to maintain academic rigor and international appeal. However, to ensure deep engagement with the audience, Q&A will be open to both English and Japanese, with the lecturer providing summaries in both languages as needed.
